This was even before The Outsiders – it was a crush based on seeing the Nestle Crunch commercial, where he’s playing the candy bar like an instrument – maybe even the oboe, which I play too! I am crushing so hard that I believe my locker-mate when she tells me that her family back in the states is friends with his family and she can, like, pass a note to him or something if I want her to. I know she is lying, that damn Sasha Corwin, but I want to believe it so bad that I send a note with her just before summer break, and then I am so embarrassed that I avoid her all the next year, just so I don’t have to hear her lie about why he hasn’t written back to me.
